The aim of this invention is to lower the fuel consumption of internal combustion engines and at the same time reduce their impact on the environment. The object is to be achieved by means of a rotary piston machine with uniformly rotating piston rotors which employs the Joule cycle with heat recovery. Integrated into the rotary piston machine is a compression part and an expansion part. Since, during expansion, the expansion piston rotor is subjected to hot working gases only over half a revolution, the thermal loading is lower than that in a gas turbine. The possibility of using ceramic materials is provided by this advantage as regards cooling. The invention can also be used as a combined expansion/compression machine, a compressor, an expansion machine, a combined unit for many technical installations, e.g. heat pumps, a cooling and air-conditioning system or a supercharger for an internal combustion engine.
