Process for removing mercury from aqueous liquids

Mercury can be removed from mercury-containing liquids, in particular alkali metal hydroxide solutions, if these are made to flow through a filter medium composed of felted layers. After penetrating onto the clean side, the mercury separates from the remaining liquid, collects and can be isolated. The filter medium is advantageously subjected at intervals to the action of ultrasound, in particular, when it is freed from time to time from retained material.
