The panoramic X-ray unit comprises a stationary frame (1) and a supporting arm (2) on whose ends an X-ray source (3) and an imaging device (4), e.g. a film cassette or the like, are arranged relative to an object to be imaged, and which furthermore has a head-supporting element (6) for supporting and positioning the skull of the patient relative to the unit. A supporting unit (5) is arranged on the frame (1). The supporting element (6) is mounted on the supporting unit (5) so as to be movable linearly and in parallel. At the same time, the supporting arm (2) is mounted so as to be rotatable on the supporting unit (5). Furthermore, elements (7, 8) are provided for compensation of the movement of the supporting unit (5) relative to the frame (1) with the same movement, but in the opposite direction, of the supporting element (6) such that the supporting element (6) remains stationary relative to the the frame (1) during imaging. <IMAGE>
