The invention relates to a process for the preparation of aqueous emulsions of oxidatively drying polyethylene glycol-modified alkyd resins, which is characterised in that a copolymer of unsaturated fatty acids, methacrylic acid and vinyl or vinylidene compounds is reacted with polyethylene glycol and polyols, mono- and dicarboxylic acids to give an acrylic-modified alkyd resin. This component is partially esterified by means of an alkyd resin containing drying fatty acids, and the alkyd resin combination is emulsified in water with neutralisation of the acid groups. The emulsions have particularly good properties with respect to stability, dryability and gloss.
