The invention relates to a process and apparatus for the purification of industrial waste water containing complexing agents, which waste waters can also contain complexed heavy metal ions and free heavy metal ions. The complexing agents are oxidatively destroyed in an acid environment at elevated temperature. After the neutralisation of the mixture, a sludge-like sediment forms which is pumped off. The treated waste water no longer contains any complexing agents and can be fed directly to the municipal sewage system, which may also contain metal ions.
