In a process for producing building materials having favourable acoustic and/or thermal insulating properties, an inorganic starting material such as, for example, fly ash or slake is comminuted and intimately mixed with a substance which evolves gases, and this mixture is heated, if necessary, a porous material having the desired properties being formed.
