The microprocessor has an arithmetic logic unit (ALU) data path 104 and a control unit 200 for supplying control signals for the ALU data path, wherein the control unit has a control program, an abort request terminal of the microprocessor is connected to receive an externally generated abort request signal, and abort logic means coupled with the control unit is arranged to generate an abort sequence in response to the abort request signal, the abort sequence comprising control signals causing the microprocessor to abort the instruction being executed at the end of the current microcycle, to store the address of the aborted instruction, and to execute an indirect jump operation for further system operation.
