In the case of multi-phase or multi-component mixtures, in particular, contained in pressurised containers, the mean density of the mixture (3) can be determined by differential pressure measurement. For this purpose, two pressures (p1, p2) are sensed at a relatively short vertical spacing a, the differential pressure is determined therefrom and the mean density is calculated in a computer circuit (R1) as a function of the differential pressure (p12), the spacing a of the pressure sensings and the acceleration due to gravity. The variable obtained in this manner can be used as a control variable for mixture control, in hydrostatic level measurement and for determining the vapour content of a vapour/liquid mixture (wet steam). <IMAGE>
