In a scanning-type thermal imager with laser rangefinder, there is generally only a random readiness for reception of the laser rangefinder. To ensure adequate readiness for reception of the laser rangefinder with the least possible complexity at the receiver end, several pulses are emitted for a rangefinding operation and the number of detectors and the time of the sending out of the pulses are selected in accordance with the desired range. The method according to the invention is intended for thermal imagers with laser rangefinder. <IMAGE>
