The device comprises means (2) for detecting points with steep gradient which receives a luminance value for each point of an image and compares it with that for the neighbouring points, means (3) for determining a lower bound value Nz for the number of points contained in the region of connected points with steep gradient and which contains the point under consideration, means (4) for determining a first estimate of the type of the point under consideration, which compares the value Nz to a threshold NS2, the point being estimated to be a contour point if Nz > NS2, or to be a texture point if Nz </= NS2; means (5 and 6) for determining a second and a third estimate as a function of the estimated type of the neighbouring points with steep gradient on the same line, and on the following line; means (7) for determining a fourth estimate as a function of the estimated type of the points with steep gradient following the point under consideration on the same line; and means (8) for determining a fifth estimate as a function of the estimated type of the corresponding point in the preceding line. The five successive estimates make it possible to determine with increasing certainty whether a point with steep gradient is a contour point or a texture point.
