1,224,932. Indirect ammonia fuel cells. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 29 April, 1968 [1 June, 1967], No. 20195/68. Heading HlB. A fuel cell has an iridium or iridium alloy catalyst in the anode chamber and a supply of NH 3 thereto. In operation the catalyst is heated and dissociates the NH3 to N 2 and H 2 which latter is used as fuel by the cell. The alloy may be Ir-Pt, Ir-Ti, Ir-Ta, Ir,Fe or Ir-Ni. The catalyst may be supported on, e.g., Al 2 0 8 , C, SiO 2 , pumice, zeolite or metallic substrate, or may be unsupported. The catalyst may substantially fill the anode chamber or may occupy the part further from the anode of a chamber divided by a hydrogen permeable membrane of, e.g., Pd-Ag alloy, or silicone, to which the catalyst may be bonded. The catalyst may be heated by a resistance tube furnace around the anode chamber. |
