[Also in Division B5] A web or board for surfacing a sports area comprises layers a 1 , a 2 and a 3 , the middle layer a 2 being a strip or sheet of 0.1-0.8mm. thick steel or of 0.5-2.5mm. thick plastics material having a Shore A hardness of 40-90 and the layers a 1 and a 3 each being a 3-10mm. thick web or board provided on one side only with parallel ribs of height 1-5mm., cross-sectional area of 2-25mm2 and spacing of 5-20mm., and made of a thermoplastics material having a mean elongation of from 400-800% and a modulus of elasticity of 60-100 kg/cm2 and consisting of 100 parts by weight of bitumen, 50-120 parts by weight of an ethylene polymer and, optionally, up to 100 parts of a filler. The ethylene polymer may be a copolymer of 3-70 parts by weight of n-butyl acrylate units per 100 parts of ethylene units. The ribs may be of semi- (or part) circular, square, hemi- (or part) elliptical, rectangular or dove-tailed cross-section. The layers a 1 and a 3 may be made by extrusion or moulding and may be united to the middle layer by bonding or fusion. The structure may be placed into position on or bonded to a sub-grade of red gravel, tufaceous sand, asphalt or cement.
