A number of customers take their selected goods to checkout positions, at which staff members use keyboards (1,2,3) to record details of the purchases. The customers then wheel their trolleys to the central cash desk (4) to receive a printed bill and pay for the goods. Each keyboard (1,2,3) is linked via serial interfaces (19) to a central processor (18) which drives a printer (11). A keyboard (23) at the cash desk (4) is also linked to the processor to record the payment. - Each keyboard contains a key matrix, an LCD display, a local processor, a magnetic card reader and a memory circuit. The memory circuit includes both RAM and EPROM memories. The keyboards have time-sharing access to the central unit.
