A die-cutting machine consists of a pressing head adapted to be raised and lowered relatively to a work support. To lower the head quickly, hydraulic fluid from a pump is fed through an electromagnetically actuated control valve to a chamber. Additional fluid is fed from another chamber which thereby causes the head to be lowered fast until it abuts a punch. A rapid rise in pressure in the valve operates a control valve to connected chamber with a discharge conduit and operates a pressure switch to de-energize the electromagnet of the valve and allow the head to be raised via fluid fed to the chamber.
