The novel process can be used to produce recesses, the rear wall of which is closed again after the production of the recess and lies in the plane of the metal sheet or hollow body, the rear wall having a butt seam. The process consists in punching a hole or opening, the dimensions of which are smaller than those of the recess to be produced, and in deforming the metal sheet or hollow body in such a way with the aid of a tool, the dimensions of which correspond to those of the recess to be produced, that a recess with a continuous smooth rear wall which excludes spray is produced.
