An adhesive composition comprises a liquid alkyl cyanoacrylate monomer admixed with a colloidal silicon dioxide thickening agent, this silicon dioxide forming substantially the whole solid content and being present in a concentration of not more than 15% by weight of the composition. The monomer may have the general formula CH 2 =C(CN)COOR wherein R is a C 1-20 straight, branched or cyclic alkyl, and is preferably butyl - 2 - cyanoacrylate. The thickening agent is preferably amorphous or pyrogenic silicon dioxide with particle size of 0À01-0À5 micron.
