In order to reduce the nitrogen oxide emission of the exhaust gases of an internal combustion engine, an air-fuel mixture with a high air ratio lambda is set in the periods of operation at constant speed. The mixture is controlled by way of the air or fuel feed as a function of the variation in power output or of the pressure in the engine intake pipe.
