[Also in Division F2] Artificial respiration apparatus includes a control valve comprising a chamber 32, a passage 22 for the supply of respiratory gas to the chamber, a second passage 58 for the exhaust of gas from the chamber to atmosphere and a third passage 52 for connecting the patient to the chamber, valve seats 64, 66 at the junction between the first and second passages 22, 58 respectively and the chamber and a valve element 68 movable between the valve seats 64, 66 to close either the first or second passages 22, 58 from the chamber, the valve element being unsupported but guided between the valve seats by portions 46 of the wall of the chamber which separate channels 44 formed in the wall of the chamber. For 'mouth-to-mouth' resuscitation, a mouthpiece 26 is fitted to the passage 22. When the operator exhales into the tube 22 the valve element 68 closes against the seat 66 so that the exhalations pass to the patient via the chamher 32 and the passage 52. When the operator removes his mouth from the device to inhale, the patient commences to exhale into the passage 52 so that the valve element closes against the other seat 68. The patients exhalations then pass to the exhaust passage 58. Alternatively, the valve may be connected to a manual or automatic air supplying means. The valve element may be a thin rigid plate, replaceable by a coin, or a flexible member (84, Figure 3) with a peripheral skirt (86). The periphery of the valve element extends radially beyond the seat 66 so that when closed against the seat 66 it is subjected on both sides to pressures in the duct 52 and the chamber 32.</p> |
