The invention relates to an arc extinguishing system having an insulating-material splitting chamber with contacts (2, 4) which can move relative to one another and with insulating longitudinal separating walls (28, 30) which are provided with a U-shaped iron core (6) in the arc movement direction. According to the invention, in each case one of the limbs (16, 18) of the iron core (6) is arranged parallel to the movement plane of the contacts (2, 4) on both sides of the contacts (2, 4), and a current loop (20) having at least one turn is arranged around the web (14) of the iron core (6), and is constructed as a part of the fixed contact (2). As a result of this design, a high arc voltage and rapid contact opening, and hence a short arc-extinguishing time, are achieved with a simple design construction of the arc-extinguishing system. <IMAGE>
