In a wood-processing machine, the drive motor (1) for the tool is switched to a rated-load stage when the workpiece approaches the tool; after completion of the processing operation, the drive motor (1) is switched to a no-load stage which holds it approximately at the no-load speed. In an exemplary embodiment having a three-phase asynchronous motor as the drive motor (1), in the no-load stage, each main winding (2) in the stator of the drive motor (1) is connected in series with an auxiliary winding (8). In the rated-load stage during the processing operation, only the main windings (2) are switched on. After the processing operation, the auxiliary windings (8) are connected via switches (9), by means of a controller (10). <IMAGE>
