Process for oxidising hydrogen sulphide contained in exhaust gases

In the oxidation of hydrogen sulphide contained in exhaust gases and/or organic sulphur compounds, catalysts are used which contain a) cobalt oxide and b) tungsten oxide and/or molybdenum oxide as active components and which are applied to a support of silicic acid which has an internal surface area (according to BET) of 50 to 200 m<2>/g and a water uptake capacity of 60 to 120 ml/100 g.
