In order to reduce the premature ageing of drilling and cutting emulsions, a process for the treatment of oil/water-based emulsions is proposed in which at least one copper electrode and a counter-electrode are arranged in the emulsion and copper ions are introduced into the emulsion from the copper electrode connected as the anode by appplying a direct voltage, which is preferably below the gas-evolution voltage of the aqueous phase of the emulsion.
