PURPOSE:To increase the response speed and to prolong the display life by forming a display electrode on one of two substrates one of which is transparent and a counter electrode on the other and by sealing a specified styryl compound, a supporting electrolyte, a nonaqueous org. solvent and a basic polymer as an additive in the space between the substrates. CONSTITUTION:A display electrode 2 is formed on one of two substrates 1, 1 at least one of which is transparent, and a counter electrode 3 is formed on the other, and a styryl compound represented by the formula, a supporting electrolyte, a nonaqueous org. solvent and a basic polymer as an additive are sealed in the space between the substrates 1, 1. Polyacrylamide, polymethacrylamide, an acrylamide-methacrylamide copolymer or the like is used as the basic polymer. The polymer vanishes the early developed color of the styryl compound as a dye, and it captures ions produced by a side reaction and ions contained from the first to inhibit a side reaction. The polymer is adsorbed on the surface of the electrode made of ITO or the like to modify the surface state and to increase the response effect. The life of the resulting display element can be prolonged, and the element can be used in household appliances or the like. |
