High gloss coating is produced on fibrous substrate by a) forming oil-in-water emulsion of aq. dispersion of film-forming binder as continuous phase and water-immiscible volatile liquid, which does not dissolve this binder, as discontinuous phase, using binder which can be shaped by heat and press. and can form opaque vesicular film, whilst most of drops of volatile liquid in emulsion are =1 mu and none are >5 mu; b) applying this emulsion to surface of substrate; c) hardening structure of emulsion film by first evaporating part of water to form binder matrix contg. volatile liquid droplets of about same size as those in emulsion; d) then evaporating remaining water and volatile liquid from droplets, to form numerous air-binder interfaces, so that broken vesicle structure forms inside continuous film, giving light, opaque region on substrate; e) calendering surface at elevated temp. and linear press. is not 17 kg/cm. without destroying vesicular structure; and f) smoothing surface. Coating has highly reflective lustre and superior colour (ink) absorption qualities, which can be regulated to some extent.
|
