摘要 PURPOSE:To prevent reduction in the color developing and vanishing phenomenon due to repeated use by placing two substrates one of which has a transparent electrode so that they confront each other, holding a display body contg. essentially an EC material, a supporting electrolyte and an org. solvent between the substrates, and adding a solvent having a hydrophilic group and a hydrophobic group in the molecule to the display body as an electrode surface modifier. CONSTITUTION:Two substrate 1, 1 one of which has a transparent electrode 2 are placed so that they confront each other to form a member of a display element. A display body 6 contg. essentially an EC material, a supporting electrolyte and an org. solvent is held in the member in the form of a soln., and a solvent having a hydrophilic group at one terminal of the molecule and a hydrophobic group at the other terminal is added to the display body 6 as an electrode surface modifier. The modifier is represented by a formula R1OH (where R1 is 1-10C satd. or unsatd. hydrocarbon) or by a formula R2OH (where R2 is a group selected among groups represented by the formulae). The modifier is easily adsorbed on the surface of the electrode owing to the OH group at one terminal of the molecule, and it brings each dye molecule close to the surface of the electrode because the dhydrophobic group at the other terminal interacts well with the hydrophobic group of the dye molecule. Thus, reduction in the color developing and vanishing phenomenon due to repeated use is reduced.
