Method comprising applying a modified enamel coating compsn. to the metal surface, baking the coating, and heat-sealing a propylene polymer layer to the enamel. The modified enamel compsn. is prepd. by dissolving a carboxyl-modified polypropylene resin at 100 degrees C in a solvent comprising a 10-22C satd. or unsatd. aliphatic acid or alcohol or a 10-30C satd. or unsatd. hydrocarbon. The soln. is then added to an enamel coating compsn. to give a mixt. contg. 60-95 wt. % epoxy resin, 5-40 wt. % urea-formaldehyde resin and 0.01-5 wt. % carboxyl-modified polypropylene resin (based on solids). The process is esp. useful for the mfr. of easy-to-open cans with removable polypropylene closure. Higher peel strengths are obtd. than when the carboxyl-modified polypropylene is added directly to the enamel compsn.
|
