The magnitude of the engaging pressure applied to an annular piston 34 of a friction disc clutch 20, between input and output shafts 10, 12 on a motor-vehicle, during engagement is controlled by an accelerator-operated valve 128 providing a torque-demand signal pressure 118 responsive to engine throttle setting, opposed by a torque-sensitive pressure 82 provided by a rotating regulator-valve 56 variably loaded in response to yield of springs 80 which transmit the drive from the freely mounted output-member 48 of the clutch to a spider 50 fast on the output shaft 12. The torque-demand and torque-sensitive pressures 118, 82 act on opposite sides of the loading piston 92 of a torque modulating valve 88 which meters modulated clutch engaging pressure 46 from an input driven pump P. At above a predetermined vehicle speed an output driven governor valve 136 applies pressure 126 to shift leftwards a transition valve 108 which cuts off torquedemand pressure 118 from and applies full pump-pressure 124 to the modulator valve piston 92 which is thereby moved fully left to apply full pump pressure to the clutch engaging line 46. The clutch is engaged by depression of the accelerator 130 and is disengaged just before the vehicle is stationary by insufficient pump pressure to engage the clutch, allowing spring 38 to disengage the clutch plates.
