The process is intended for purifying water by adding, hypochlorite produced electro-chemically in a cell by feeding this with an aqueous chloride solution with a concentration below 60 g/litre (as Na C1) and maintaining a pH above 7. The anode and cathode in the cell are separated by a cation exchanging membrane. The pH in the cell and/or in the water to be treated is preferably controlled by adding thereto a proportion of the alkaline solution produced at the cathode.
