Ni pellets are preheated above the carbonyl decomposition temp. and are passed counter currentwise against a Ni carbonyl contg. gas stream through a reaction decompsn. chamber, at least 95% of the gas being extracted prior to its coming into contact with the incoming pellets. The carbonyl in the remaining gas contg. at least 3 g/m3 Ni in carbonyl form is decomposed and mainly carbonyl free gas is drawn off near the pellet inlet and reintroduced at a point in the pellet path generating a back pressure in the flow path. |
