<p>PURPOSE:To remove easily and automatically a part of the secondary coating of an optical fiber without damaging the core fiber by holding both ends of the part to be removed between cooling jigs and by melting and removing the part with an inert gas heated to a high temp. CONSTITUTION:When a part 8 of the secondary coating 4 of an optical fiber 2 is removed, both ends of the part 8 are held between cooling jigs 6 through which cooling water is circulated, and an inert gas 7 such as nitrogen heated to about 200 deg.C high temp. is blown on the part 8 from a nozzle 1 while moving the part 8 in the directions of arrows A, B. The secondary coating 4 of nylon or the like having a relatively low m.p. is melted and scattered. The temp. of the inert gas 7 is decided in consideration of the difference in m.p. between the primary coating 3 and the secondary coating 4. The coating 3 is usually made of silicone resin and melts at about 300 deg.C. The coating 4 of nylon or the like melts at about 190-200 deg.C. After melting and scattering the coating 4, the fiber 2 is cleaned with a solvent or the like.</p> |
