Slide-guided prebreaking rods (15) are jointly displaceable relative to stationary prebreaking rods (14) by means of slides (16, 17). For this purpose, gearwheels (22) engage via a rack profile (20) on the slides (16, 17). There can act simultaneously on the gearwheels (22) a rotary slide (30) which automatically, in dependence on the starting speed of the machine up to its normal operation, sets the movable prebreaking rods (15) from an inoperative position (34) during the machine standstill via at least one intermediate position (35) into a maximum clamping position (36) and then back into the normal operating position (35). This allows a readjustment of the thread tension in dependence on the starting speed of the machine and consequently an immediate commencement of the thread-monitoring functions. <IMAGE>
