PURPOSE:To produce a base quartz glass material without cracks, by adding water containing an acid catalyst to a silicic acid ester, allowing the resultant transparent solution to stand, heat-treating the resultant gel, and calcining the heat-treated gel. CONSTITUTION:Water containing an acid catalyst, e.g. hydrochloric acid, in a volume of 1.5-3 times of that of a silicic acid ester, e.g. methyl silicate, and the resultant mixture is stirred for 1-several hours. The suspension temperature is then increased to convert the suspension into a transparent solution, which is then put into a given vessel, allowed to stand, gelatinized, if necessary washed with water, heated-treated, hardened and calcined at >=1,000 deg.C. Thus, the desired base quartz glass material can be produced by the sol-gel method without using a diluent, e.g. an alcohol. |
