Process for the sulphonation or sulphonation of a prim. organic material which is pref. on aromatic cpd. or a fatty alcohol possessing 8-18C using SO3, in which nondiluted SO3 in the liq. or gaseous form is fed into a reaction liq. contg. the organic material and its sulphonate or sulphate deriv., themixt. being in turbulent flow; and the mixt. is cooled before or after removing between 1/40th and 1/2000th party by wt. of the mixt. as the reaction product, and replacing the amt. removed by fresh organic material; the mixt. is then recycled and more SO3 added. The reaction mixt. and the reaction liq. are pref. in a circulating system which does not employ an external vacuum, and the apparent Reynolds number of the reaction liq. where it meets the SO3 is pref. 3000-18,000. In conventional processes, a diluent is added to prevent discolouration due to the heat of reaction. By recirculating most of the cold reaction mixt., no diluent is required but colourless products are obtd., e.g. when mfg. surfactants.
|
