The spindle 12 of the machine tool (for example, a drill) rotates in a sleeve 8 fixed to a hydraulic piston 30 and to a pneumatic piston 24. When the compressed air is supplied via 29 in order to cause 12 to advance, the oil contained between the bottom 2 and the partition 20 first circulates through the perforations 37b and then, once these are closed off by 30, through the needle 39 and the perforations 37a, thus braking the movement in an adjustable manner. Since the position of the tube or plunger 37 can be adjusted (screw 38), the point along the advance stroke where braking begins can be determined. The rapid return is ensured by the valve 36 which then lifts. <IMAGE>
