In an electric-discharge machining process with numerical control and a generic electrode, the tool electrode oriented in the direction of the z axis is retracted in translational movement from a faulty interval condition position along a two-dimensional advance path prescribed in a plane x-y over a prescribed distance in a prescribed direction generally transverse to all the planes x-y, y-z and z-x, in such a way that the end portion with its generic shape is withdrawn from the machined surfaces adjacent to the machining interval of the faulty condition. This retraction movement can be executed under numerical control by displacing the tool electrode in a translational movement over a first predetermined distance in a plane x-y and perpendicularly to a portion of the advance path which is located immediately upstream of this position, and by simultaneously retracting the electrode axially in the direction of the z axis over a second predetermined distance. <IMAGE>
