Process for the isothermal chlorination of 1-2C hydrocarbons and/or their partially chlorinated derivs. comprises (i) passing the feed under pressure through an elongated gaseous zone; (ii) passing a Cl2-contg. gas through a second elongate gaseous zone alongside the first zone and sepd. from it by a porous element, (iii) maintaining the Cl2-contg. gas at a pressure greater than that of the feed gas such that the Cl2-contg. gas diffuses into the feed, (iv) reacting at least part of the diffused Cl2 with the feed, and (v) withdrawing the desired prod. from the first zone. Appts. for the above process is also claimed. high yields are obtd. economically. The prods. are useful as solvents, chemical inters., inters. to refrigerants etc. Higher Cl2/feed ratios may be employed whilst still giving almost complete conversion. Stepwise reaction with cooling of the exothermal reaction or recycle of less highly chlorinated prods. and unreacted gases is not necessary.
|
