Method of sealing glass to metal, esp. tungsten in which the metal is placed inside a heating coil in a neutral atmosphere (N2 or Ar) and the glass is placed in contact with the metal and the metal is heated to about 1400 degrees (opt. to 1800 degrees C) to melt the glass where it contacts the metal. The method is esp. suitable for sealing a ring of glass to the metal, the ring subsequently being used to seal to a discharge tube. Impurities in the seal are avoided.
|
