The power steering system uses an electric motor (3), driven by the vehicle's battery (7), to provide additional drive at a geared coupling box (3) fitted between the steering column (1) and the steering mechanism (6). The motor is controlled (4) by a circuit which monitors (2) the displacement of the steering wheel and alters the electric suyply to the motor to vary the motor torque in orooortion to the steering wheel displacement. Additional control data is derived from measures of the road speed of the vehicle and the torque at the steering column, with the control circuit (4) varying the torque generated by the electric motor in proportion to these measures.
