The apparatus comprises an array 10 of ultrasonic transducers associated with a transmitting stage 20, a stage 30 for receiving and processing the ultrasonic echoes from obstacles encountered by the transmitted signals in their direction of propagation, and a display stage 40. The transducers in the array 10 are grouped into 2<n> sub-windows in which uncorrected echography of a region of the tissues under examination is carried out. The receiving stage 30 includes a device for calculating both the correcting delays to be sent over delay devices 61 - 68 and the amplitude correction coefficients to be applied to the multipliers 161 - 168. The calculating device itself comprises 2<n> - 1 cross-correlation circuits 101, 102, etc which operate with the help of n successive bisections of the aperture of the array 10. <IMAGE>
