In order to be able to form packages, for example from a web (12) of film, the edges of the web (12) are taken hold of and clamped fast by a large number of clamping points (20) which are arranged on the links (18) of two chains (14). Each clamping point (20) has a compressed-air cylinder (26) with a shut-off valve (32). At a clamping station, all compressed-air cylinders (26) are filled with compressed air one after the other, in order to clamp the web of material fast. Provided at an outlet point is a ramp (40) onto which the shut-off valves (32) of the cylinders (20) open, resulting in removal of air from the latter and unclamping of the web of material. <IMAGE>
