To plane workpieces flat and level, the portable electric planer is provided with a height fence in the form of a bar attached transversely to the planing direction. This bar rests on two boards guided parallel to one another with the wide sides. The support for the workpiece consists of a grid lying between these boards and vertically adjustable with regard to their top edge. The vertical adjustment is made by a spindle first of all displacing the grid lengthwise. This longitudinal movement is deflected parallelogram-like into a horizontal movement via an angular guide in the lateral boards. The grid is thereby always guided in parallel with regard to the boards. The uniform thickness and planeness of the workpiece is obtained by the portable electric planer being guided across the workpiece as often as necessary until no more chips are removed due to the height fence.
