A method for estimating the relative depth of an underwater object with respect to a sonar system actively locating this object is specified in which, for the purpose of achieving high vertical angular resolution at a low height of the receiving base, the received signals from at least three transducer groups arranged above one another and having at least one transducer are processed in such a manner that at least two directional characteristics located adjacently to one another in the vertical direction are formed, the major lobes of which in each case exhibit a distinct null. The major lobes with nulls are repeatedly rotated over a vertical angular range, and in each rotational position the instantaneous phase differences between the received signals obtained via the two major lobes are determined. For each rotational position a frequency distribution of the phase difference values is determined from a multiplicity of phase difference determinations. The position of the extreme values in the individual frequency distribution curves is used for estimating the relative angle of direction to the underwater object.
