A synthetic aperture radar system for space or airborne operation comprising a cross-correlating means (1) for correlating the received data signals with a reference signal which has a frequency-time history equal and opposite to the frequency-time history of the ideal received data signal, said cross-correlating means producing a series of constant-frequency signals displaced in time, means (3) for buffering the cross-correlated signals, means (5) which processes the buffered signals using a discrete Fourier transform, means (6) which selects the constant frequency signals, either before or after the latter are transformed, on the basis of a Doppler centroid estimation, and accumulating means (8) which sums the processed signals. The system can be implemented in single channel or multi-channel form to provide one or two-dimensional processing. Band-pass filters may be added after cross-correlation to improve the efficiency of the processing operations. |
