PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound advantageously from hydrogen and carbon monoxide, by reacting the hydrogen with carbon monoxide at a specific molar ratio between the hydrogen gas and carbon monoxide gas in the reaction system and partial pressure of the carbon monoxide gas respectively in the presence of a ruthenium compound and an imidazole as a catalyst under heating and pressure conditions. CONSTITUTION:Hydrogen is reacted with carbon monoxide in the presence of a ruthenium compound and an imidazole, particulaly benzimidazole compound in an amount of 10-10<7>mol based on one gram atom ruthenium metal under heating and pressure to produce and oxygen-containing organic compound, preferably methanol, ethanol or/and ethylene glycol. In the process, the molar ratio between the hydrogen gas and carbon monoxide gas in the reaction system is set at 1.2-20, and the partial pressure of the carbon monoxide gas is set at 20- 300kg/cm<2>.G to suppress the decomposition of the imidazole and give the aimed compound in high yield directly from the above-mentioned raw materials. The above-mentioned reaction is usually carried out in a solvent, e.g. an ether. |
