In a multi-spindle automatic lathe with, for example, six tool spindles, the intention is, by simplifying the movement of the tools, to make it possible to manufacture a high number of workpieces per unit time and allow rapid replacement if a tool wears out or breaks. For this purpose, the invention envisages mounting the tools 81 on tool shafts which can be moved axially backwards and forwards along axes 66 parallel to the axis 8 of the drum, can be pivoted about the axes 66 and can be moved by the control cams. The rapid pivoting movement thereby possible and the rapid axial movement of the tools by means of the tool shafts makes it possible rapidly to machine workpieces held in the workpiece spindles. <IMAGE>
