In a process for retreading vehicle tyres and for reinforcing the retreaded tyre by means of intermediate plies, stiffening intermediate plies are introduced in the shoulder region of the tyre carcass by fixing a prefabricated rubber tread strip to the carcass, into the lower layer of which the stiffening intermediate plies are anchored as early as during the production of the rubber tread strip. The rubber tread strip is bonded in a conventional manner to the carcass by a bonding rubber layer applied to this as an adhesion promoter, which bonding rubber layer is vulcanised at low temperature and pressure in a pressurised chamber. The belt-shaped or strip-shaped intermediate plies, for example made of steel or textile belt material coated with unvulcanised rubber, are applied to the top side of the rubber filling of the compression mould in a flat press during the production of the rubber tread strip and firmly anchored in the lower layer of the rubber tread strip by the pressure and heat treatment in the press. The carcass retreaded with such a rubber tread strip thereby obtains a substantial reinforcement and stiffening in the shoulder region for the purpose of reducing the rolling resistance.
