In the drawing of wire, the wire is heated in a manner corresponding to the deformation performed and is then often insufficiently cooled, thus being fed at an undesirably high temperature to downstream reels and subjecting their coils to impermissably high stresses due to shrinkage effects which occur during cooling. According to the invention, a separate cooling cylinder 2 receiving a multiplicity of turns of the wire 16, which form non-overlapping coils, is arranged downstream of one or more, and at the very least of the last, die of a drawing device and this cooling cylinder is expediently equipped with feed screws 8 which are arranged in a uniformly distributed manner, are operated in synchronism with the cooling cylinder, project beyond the circumferential surface of the latter and push the coiling wire forwards axially, with the result that the wire upstream of the reels enters into large-area contact with the surface of the cooling cylinder cooling it and is transported onwards in a continuous manner in order to guarantee space for more wire as it arrives.
