New sampling criteria which are advantageous for a hierarchial digital TV system and can lead to compatibility with standard systems and to simplified transcoding between them use a number of samples per active line which is rich in powers of 2 to support several levels of hierarchy, with the number of such samples being advantageously selected as a multiplicative product of two integers one of which is a plural integer power of 2 (prefer 16) and the other of which has a value near 44. This can facilitate transcoding by enabling the samples to be processed in conveniently sized blocks. A number which satisfies these criteria is 704, which also approximates the number of samples yielded in the active line portion when sampling at 13.5 MHz in a 625/50 or 525/60 system, which number of samples may be approximated to 17/16x704 and 21/16x704 respectively. <IMAGE> |
