An inertial rotoaccumulator system utilises a flywheel which is run up to speed during vehicle braking and allowed to contribute energy during subsequent acceleration through the intermediary of an infinite ratio continuously variable planetary drive arrangement. This drive arrangement has a main shaft (A) and a flywheel shaft (B). Another shaft (B2) is rotatable on the flywheel shaft. Continuously variable ratio belt-type drives link compound planet pulleys (C1, C2) on the main shaft to pulleys (B1_1, and B1_2) on the flywheel shaft and the other shaft and a further continuously variable ratio belt type drive means (B2_2, B2_1, D1, D2) links together the flywheel shaft and the other shaft, to enable the ratio to be set so that the flywheel shaft can rotate freely without any motion being transmitted back to the main shaft during intervals when it is required to store energy in the flywheel.
|
