发明名称 LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY ELEMENT
摘要 PURPOSE:To improve a time-divided driving characteristic by improving the disposition of the twist angle of liquid crystal molecules and the axes of polarizing plates. CONSTITUTION:An upper electrode substrate and a lower electrode substrate are disposed to face each other in such a way that the rubbing direction 6 of the upper electrode substrate and the orientation of liquid crystal molecules coincide nearly with each other, that the rubbing direction 7 of the lower electrode substrate and the orientation of the liquid crystal molecules coincide nearly with each other and that the twist direction and angle 10 of the liquid crystal molecules attain the range from 110 deg. to 140 deg.. The twist direction and angle 10 of the liquid crystal molecules can be taken into the structure in which the liquid crystal molecules are twisted in the range from 110 deg. to 140 deg. by adding an optically active substance which induces the twist direction and angle 10 of the liquid crystal molecules to the nematic liquid crystal to be sandwiched between the upper and lower electrode substrates so that the pitch P of the spiral has at least the relation 1.5d<P<6d with the thickness d of the liquid crystal layer. On the other hand an upper polarizing plate is disposed on the outside surface of the upper electrode substrate and a lower polarizing plate on the outside surface of the lower electrode substrate, respectively, in such a way that the angle 11 between the absorption axis 8 of the upper polarizing plate and the absorption axis 9 of the lower polarizing plate attains the range from 70 deg. to 90 deg. on the inside of the twist angle 10 of the liquid crystal molecules.
